NFL Picks: CFL Week 5 Preview and Free Sports Picks

NFL Picks - CFL Week 5 Preview: The road dogs were out in full-force last week as they recorded a clean sweep in Week 4 of the CFL regular season. Hamilton started things off with a 39-31 win over British Columbia as a 3.5-point road dog on Friday night.

Winnipeg outlasted Toronto 33-24 as a 3.5-point dog in the early game on Saturday, while Edmonton remained perfect on the year with 24-19 victory over Calgary as a three-point underdog later that night. 

This past Sunday night, Saskatchewan completed the sweep with a 27-24 victory over Montreal as an 11.5-point road dog.

The following is brief preview of this week’s CFL games along with the opening point spread and ‘over/under’ lines as provided by BTB.

Thursday, July 28

BC Lions at Winnipeg Blue Bombers (-3.5)

Over/Under: 52.5

BC is still searching for its first win of the season as it is now 0-4 SU and 1-3 ATS. Winnipeg moved to 3-1 SU on the year and a perfect 4-0 ATS. The Blue Bombers are just one victory away from matching their entire win total of 2010. Winnipeg took the first game in this series last year with a 47 -35 win at home as a 2.5-point favorite. It covered the four-point spread as a road underdog in a 16-14 loss the second time they met.

The Lions are 1-3-1 ATS in the last five games of this series overall, but are 4-1 ATS in the last five games played in Winnipeg. The total has stayed ‘under’ in 11 of the last 16 games played at Canad Inns Stadium and in nine of the last 11 meetings overall. Blue Bomber RB Fred Reid is the CFL’s leading rusher with 71 carries for a total of 321 yards.

Friday, July 29

Montreal Alouettes at Hamilton Tiger-Cats   OFF

Over/Under: OFF

This game is currently ‘OFF’ because QB Anthony Calvillo, who sat out the second half of Sunday’s game after injuring his eye, is currently listed as questionable for Friday, but still believes he will be ready to go by game time.  The Alouettes are 3-1 SU and 2-2 ATS. Hamilton is both 2-2 SU and ATS this season. It lost two of three to Montreal last season both SU and ATS, but the one victory was a 40-3 romp as a 1.5-point home underdog the final time they met.

Montreal is 3-2 SU in its last five games at Ivor Wynne Stadium and 8-3 ATS in its last 11 games there. The total has stayed ‘under’ in nine of the last 11 meetings in Hamilton and in six of the last seven games overall. Adrian McPherson replaced Calvillo in Sunday’s game and completed 12-of-19 attempts for 98 yards and one TD, while scoring twice more with his feet.

Toronto Argonauts at Edmonton Eskimos (-9)

Over/Under: 50

Toronto has stumbled out to a 1-3 start both SU and ATS, while Edmonton continues to impress with 4-0 start both ways. These teams split the two meetings last season with the Argonauts winning on the road 29-28 as a six-point underdog and the Eskimos returning the favor with a 24-6 victory as a three-point road underdog later in the year.

Toronto has won six of the last 10 games SU in this series overall and is 10-3 ATS in the last 13 games played in Edmonton. The total has stayed ‘under’ in five of the last eight games overall, but has gone ‘over’ in two of the last three games at Commonwealth Stadium. Eskimo QB Ricky Ray is off to a blazing start with a league-high 1,231 passing yards on 78 completions, including eight for touchdowns.

Saturday, July 30

Calgary Stampeders (-2.5) at Saskatchewan Roughriders

Over/Under: 53.5

Calgary’s upset at the hands of Edmonton dropped it to 2-2 SU and 1-3 ATS on the year, while Saskatchewan’s first win of the season leaves it 1-3 both SU and ATS. These two split four games last season both SU and ATS. The Roughriders won the final meeting of the season 20-16 as a 7.5 road underdog in the West Division Finals to secure their second straight trip to the Grey Cup.

The Stampeders are 4-6 SU in the last 10 meetings and 1-4 ATS in their last four games at Mosaic Stadium. They are just 2-5 ATS in the last seven meetings overall. The total has gone ‘over’ in three of the last four games between the two. Calgary WR Nic Lewis has the third-most receiving yards in the league with 299 on 21 receptions.
