In the two other games, Calgary pulled off the mild upset on Friday as a 2.5-point road underdog in a 34-32 win over British Columbia, while Montreal pummeled Saskatchewan 39-25 as a three-point road favorite on Saturday.
The following is brief preview of this week’s CFL games along with the opening point spread and ‘over/under’ football odds as provided by BTB.
Thursday, July 14
Calgary Stampeders (-3) at Winnipeg Blue Bombers NFL Picks:
Over/Under: 52.5
Calgary is 3-1 in the last four meetings straight-up, but Winnipeg has gotten the better of it against the spread with a 3-0-1 record. Last season the Stampeders won both matchups starting with a 23-20 victory in late July as a 6.5-point home favorite in a game that stayed ‘under’ the 55-point total. Later in the season, they followed that up with a 35-32 squeaker as a three-point road favorite. The total went ‘over’ the 53.5-point line this time around.
Calgary is 0-4-1 ATS in its last five trips to Winnipeg and last year’s victory at Canad Inns Stadium was just its first outright win there in those five games. The total has gone ‘over’ in four of the last six meetings overall. Blue Bomber quarterback Buck Pierce turned in a much better performance last week against Toronto with a 61.7 percent completion rate after completing just 46.1 percent of his passes in Week 1.
Friday, July 15
Toronto Argonauts at Montreal Alouettes (-10) NFL Picks:
Over/Under: 53
These two East Division rivals split their four-game regular season series last year both SU and ATS with each winning once on the road and once at home. The last time they played one another was in the CFL Division Finals on Nov.7. The Alouettes routed the Argonauts 48-17 as a 10.5 home favorite. The total went ‘over’ the 51-point line in that game and was 2-2 in the other four.
Toronto is 1-4 ATS in its last five meetings in Montreal and just 2-9 ATS in the last 11 meetings overall. The total has gone ‘over’ in five of the last nine games. Alouette quarterback Anthony Calvillo completed 29-of-43 attempts for 419 yards and threw five touchdowns last week against Saskatchewan to tie Damon Allen as the all-time CFL leader in touchdown passes with 394.
Saturday, July 16
Saskatchewan Roughriders at Hamilton Tiger-Cats (-2.5) NFL Picks:
Over/Under: 51.5
Saskatchewan won both games against Hamilton last season. It covered as an eight-point home favorite in Week 5 with a 37-24 victory and then went on the road as a 1.5-point underdog to squeeze out 32-25 victory in Week 13. The total went ‘over’ the 55-point line the first time they met and ‘over’ the 53.5-point line in Game 2.
The Roughriders have gotten the best of the Tiger-Cats the past few seasons with nine wins in 10 games SU and an 8-2 record ATS. The total has gone ‘over’ in nine of the last 12 meetings in Hamilton. Both teams come into this game with a long list of players on the injured list including WR Rob Bagg for Saskatchewan and WR Aaron Kelly for the Tiger-Cats.
British Columbia Lions at Edmonton Eskimos (-2.5) NFL Picks:
Over/Under: 54.5
These two played three times in 2010, with BC splitting the two games in Edmonton. First, the Lions posted a 25-10 victory as a four-point road underdog on opening day and then dropped a 28-25 decision in Week 5 as a two-point road dog. The Eskimos won the season series with a 31-28 overtime victory as a six-point road underdog in mid-October.
BC is 4-1 ATS in its last five games at Commonwealth Stadium. The total has gone ‘over’ in five of the last six meetings in Edmonton and in six of the last seven games overall. The Lions’ defensive secondary took a hit when Stanley Franks went down with a season-ending knee injury in the loss to Calgary. Edmonton slotback Fred Stamps is off to a fast start with 212 rushing yards on just 10 carries.
