2011 Free NFL Picks Preview – Jacksonville Jaguars NFL Picks

2011 Jacksonville Jaguars Free NFL Picks Preview: Jacksonville Jaguars (8-8 SU, 9-7 ATS, 2nd Place in AFC South)

Head Coach Jack Del Rio is on the ropes this year with the Jacksonville Jaguars, as this might be a season in which he has to make the playoffs with a lot of question marks surrounding his team.

The Jags have a real problem at the quarterback position that has really existed since the days of QB Mark Brunell. They drafted QB Blaine Gabbert with their first round draft choice this year, but they still have the incumbent, QB David Garrard floating around. Garrard really has never had a fantastic season for Jacksonville, and it really only seems to be a matter of time until Gabbert takes over.

When Gabbert does, assuming that it is this season, it could be a hassle for the Jags. Many think that Gabbert should have stayed in school for one more season, but he proved the critics wrong and was a very high draft choice.

Jacksonville hasn’t historically drafted that entire well, and this year, without a defensive draft choice or any tremendously notable additions on this side of the ball, things could be in question. This was a unit that ranked No. 28 overall at 371.8 yards per game and No. 27 at 26.2 points per game.

But as always, the Jaguars will only go as far as RB Maurice Jones-Drew runs them. In just 14 games last season, he had 1,324 rushing yards and another 317 through the air as a receiver.

A second place schedule this year is not the easiest, especially knowing that the San Diego Chargers and the New York Jets both finished second best in their respective divisions this past season. The brutal stretch of this season starts in Week 6 against the Pittsburgh Steelers. From that point, there are games against the Baltimore Ravens, Houston Texans, Indianapolis Colts, Cleveland Browns, the Texans again, the Chargers, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Atlanta Falcons, Tennessee Titans, and the Colts again.

Needless to say, if the Jags don’t get out of the blocks in a hurry to start this season, things could get very, very ugly, especially knowing that Gabbert will probably end up taking over. Going .500 would be a great goal this year, but we know that that probably won’t happen. Del Rio had better not be getting too comfortable in the Sunshine State.
